C1830, ANTIQUE 19thC WILLIAM IV WATERCOLOUR PAINTING SCRAPBOOK LEATHER ALBUM. Provenance: Croxteth Library, William Philip Molyneux, 2. A magnificent antique leather bound scrapbook/painting album folio containing numerous exquisite watercolours and pencil sketched illustrations, dating to the first half of 19th Century William IV period, from 1830 to 1838. The album, with contemporary embossed red Morocco leather gilt tooled binding and gilt page edges, contains a library bookplate for William Philip Earl of Sefton, Croxteth Library. William Philip Molyneux, 2nd Earl of Sefton (18 September 1772 20 November 1838), also known as Lord Dashalong, was a sportsman, gambler and a friend of the Prince Regent, later to become King George IV.

The album has 70 leaves, 37 filled with watercolour paintings including exotic birds, flowers, insects and rural scenes, together with graphite sketches and portraits, many on finely embossed paper by Dobbs, De La Rue & Co, and Woofindin. Five of the watercolours are Chinese rice paper examples. The paintings themselves are all of exquisite quality, most of them signed and dated from various artists, creating one of the finest collections of late Georgian art of its type.

Artists include: Miss Coleman, Eliza Devenish, Mary Devenish, George Valentine, E. Davies, Elizabeth Barrett, Mary Barrett also M. The image gallery incorporates collages of the different paintings and sketches seen in the album to provide the best overview of these quality artworks. The 37 pages include 41 individual pieces of art, mounted one or two to a page, via triangular slits, allowing the pieces to be easily removed if desired.

Hardback, full Morocco embossed leather. X 24 cm or approximately 11 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches in size. Very light scattered foxing to some of the paintings/drawings.
